Subject: Investment Opportunity in Stella McCartney Ltd.

Executive Summary

This memo proposes that AMDP invests in Stella McCartney Ltd., a trailblazing fashion brand that aligns seamlessly with AMDP's core values of social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and profitability. Stella McCartney has been a pioneer in the luxury sustainable fashion industry, demonstrating a commitment to innovation and ethical practices that could make it a valuable addition to our investment portfolio.

I will begin by highlighting the values of AMDP, followed by an analysis of Stella McCartney’s financials as well as their commitment to sustainable/ethical standards. Next, I will provide two expert sources that authenticate Stella McCartney’s commitment to environmental and socially responsible practices. Finally, I will present my final recommendation.

AMDP Guidelines

AMDP’s values lie in investing in businesses that are both profitable while operating in a manner that is environmentally sustainable as well as ethical. Below are the guidelines that help uphold this standard.

Triple Bottom Line

Triple bottom line refers to a sustainability framework that encourages companies to focus not only on profit but also on the social and environmental impacts of their business. This concept is summarized by the three P’s:

  • Profit: measured by their financial performance

  • People: measured by their social equity contributions

  • Planet: measured by their environmental responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility is a business model in which companies integrate social and environmental concerns into their business operations and interactions with stakeholders. It is a self-regulating business model that helps a company be socially accountable - to itself, its stakeholders, and the public. By practicing corporate social responsibility, companies can be conscious of the kind of impact they are having on all aspects of society, including economic, social, and environmental.

Social Enterprise

Social enterprise is a type of business that has specific social objectives that serve its primary purpose. Social enterprises seek to maximize profits while maximizing benefits to society and the environment. These organizations function in the market as businesses but set out to achieve social objectives through commercial activities. Examples include businesses that provide microloans to entrepreneurs in poor regions, companies that produce fair trade goods, or services that incorporate employment for marginalized groups.

Carbon Footprint

The carbon footprint of a company is a measure of the total greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) directly and indirectly associated with its operations, expressed in terms of CO2 equivalent. Companies may work to reduce their carbon footprint by improving energy efficiency, shifting to renewable energy sources, and optimizing supply chains. Reducing carbon footprint is often part of a company’s sustainability goals and may be driven by regulatory requirements, customer demand for sustainable products, or the company’s corporate social responsibility strategy.

Overview of Stella McCartney Ltd.

Background

Stella McCartney, established in 2001, is a luxury fashion brand with a reputation for modern, sharp, and timeless designs. The brand has been a leader in sustainable luxury fashion, consistently pushing the boundaries to create high-end apparel and accessories without compromising its ethical and environmental standards. Renowned for avoiding leather and fur, Stella McCartney is the first luxury brand that offer products made using renewable or recycled materials, ensuring reduced environmental impact. Roughly 80% of the brand’s leather alternative is made of renewable and recycled raw elements such as grape skin- which are shown to have a 40% lower impact on global warming (Stella McCartney).

Financials

Despite its eco-friendly approach, Stella McCartney has maintained strong financial performance within the competitive luxury fashion market. The company's robust business model and growing consumer base seeking sustainable luxury goods indicate a promising return on investment.

Various financial metrics:

  • Operating Revenue (Turnover) for 2023 was £40.1 million (roughly $50.8 million in USD) which is a 23% growth from 2022.

  • Loss before taxes was 10 million pounds ($12.6 million in USD) in 2023

    • However, compared to 32.7 million pounds in 2022 which is roughly a 69% drop

  • Improved gross margin driven by a 17% decrease in operating expenses

  • Stella McCartney’s physical store sales increased by 16% to 6.3 million pounds ($8 million USD)

While most of the fashion industry including Stella McCartney is still recovering from the shock of the pandemic and the current state of the market, this company seems to be rebounding with a promising trajectory of financial growth. Despite the company still struggling to break even, the exponential narrowing in loss signifies a profit in the near future compared to their competitors.

Company Claims

According to Stella McCartney’s Impact Report of 2023, the company strives to be a “driving force behind where we position ourselves as a brand that is impacting and influencing the broader industry (Stella McCartney).” They advertise various ethical and sustainable practices including:

  • Working with local communities throughout their supply chains

  • Developed a set of policies for the company that follow the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights

  • Uses a fossil fuel and water-free alternative to animal leather

  • Partners with organizations that uphold their values including:

    • The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI): a leading alliance of trade unions, NGOs, and companies working together to promote practical solutions to end the human rights abuses in corporations.

    • UNFCC Fashion Charter for Climate Change: Convening fashion stakeholders to develop a unified position on climate change.

  • Heavily involved in activism:

    • Regular participants at the United Nation’s COP climate conferences

  • In order to increase transparency for the consumers, published the Open Apparel Registry which lists the full supply chain information for the finished products

  • Commitment to ethics while upholding the standard of quality and luxury

Experts Opinions

Despite the fact that fashion accounts for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, Stella McCartney paves the way for both sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry.

Opinion #1

According to Darin Oduyoye, chief communications officer of J.P. Morgan Asset & Wealth Management, 2024 is said to be a promising year that leaps towards innovation. Stella McCartney was highlighted as “this year’s innovation spotlight” in the NextList2024 - a collection of books, experiences, and perspectives brought together by multinational financial services.

Oduyoye states, “Stella thinks deeply about the environment and sustainability in every aspect of her business, from product design and sourcing to manufacturing and marketing. She’s an example of what’s possible—and needed—today.” Stella McCartney’s business model which exemplifies a commitment to providing good designs in an ethical way is necessary in the following years (Barrons).

Opinion #2

Good On You - a platform that rates sustainable and ethical fashion brands in order to provide accurate information to consumers - has titled Stella McCartney an “undoubted leader” in its field. They have set environmental standards for the rest of the luxury fashion industry by using eco-friendly materials such as polyester and regenerated cashmere.

Further, Good On You highlights the deep connection the founder of Stella McCartney has with animals as a lifelong vegetarian taking meaningful steps to vouch for sustainable animal material options. Stella McCartney has also announced future plans and commitments to environmental sustainability which will continue to set a high standard within the industry (Good On You).

Recommendation

In conclusion, I do recommend that AMDP invests in Stella McCartney Ltd. Despite the company still inching its way to breaking even, its commitment to social responsibility and environmental sustainability positions them to be a leader spearheading the future of this industry. Further, their financials have improved exponentially indicating promising profitability in the near future. The global sustainable fashion market is projected to grow significantly, driven by consumer awareness and demand for eco-friendly products. Investing in Stella McCartney positions AMDP at the forefront of this trend, capitalizing on the growing market while supporting sustainable business practices.
