World We Dare to Imagine: Post 1

In the legal world, not many individuals pursue “international law” as it is a category that is much less concrete than other faucets of law such as civil and criminal. While I am still far from becoming a practicing lawyer, I hope that this path leads to contributing to addressing human rights violations both locally and on a global scale. As of right now, I hope to contribute through public speaking engagements, writing articles, and engaging with the media, constantly educating myself and others about the realities of conflict and the legal mechanisms in place to address them. By fostering a broader understanding of humanitarian law, I hope to inspire others to take action, support humanitarian causes, and contribute to building a more just and compassionate world.

The excerpt of the book states, “today we are redefining the geography of community and accepting shared accountability for common human values.” Oftentimes the grave violations of human rights across international borders infringe not only on rights as citizens of a particular region - but fundamental human values. Regardless of customs, culture or tradition, human rights are considered universal, inherent to all individuals, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, or location. Therefore, the responsibility to protect and promote human rights extends beyond national borders. By addressing human rights violations internationally, countries affirm their commitment to upholding the fundamental dignity and worth of every human being. Thus, even when human rights violations take place physically in another region - this does not negate our responsibility to speak out and educate ourselves on crimes that are committed outside of our bubble. Condemning human rights violations internationally sends a powerful message of solidarity and support to the victims and affected populations. It lets them know that they are not alone and that the international community stands with them in their struggle for justice and human rights. This support can provide hope, encouragement, and a sense of empowerment to those who have suffered injustices.

Today, while there are various conventions and treaties in place that address human rights violations, many are considered soft law lacking punitive power. Thus, while there have been numerous human rights victories in international law, oftentimes we still see a lack of action that truly brings the perpetrators to justice. The United States, with its considerable influence and resources, has a unique capacity to shape the global narrative on human rights and contribute to holding perpetrators accountable. However, oftentimes other motives including political alliances and economic interest supersede the value of saving lives outside US borders. By speaking out, the United States can leverage its diplomatic, economic, and legal tools to exert pressure on states responsible for human rights violations. This can include imposing targeted sanctions, supporting international tribunals, and advocating for robust mechanisms of accountability. Holding perpetrators accountable sends a powerful message that human rights abuses will not be tolerated, regardless of the political or economic considerations at play. Thus, while I personally cannot change the trajectory of US foreign relations alone, I hope to become an influential individual in the legal field who can at least advocate and push accurate narratives to the public.
